The UMPC can double as an extra PC whenever needed as it is fully capable of most of the user applications your desktop or laptop currently allows you to enjoys. You can even synchronize your UMPC with your home PC and take your photos, music and even your TV shows with you. On vacation? Navigate any city using Microsoft’s Streets and Trips software.
Although all UMPCs give you the option of touch-screen functionality as well as the stylus option, some UMPCs have a keypad that allows you to navigate through applications. There may also be a joystick. While there are baseline standards for each UMPC running the Microsoft family of applications each manufacture’s design will be slightly different.
Today, there are several online companies that offer movies or television shows on demand either for a one-time use or for outright purchase. With your UMPC you can take your video anywhere you go or if your UMPC has an S-video output, you can connect your UMPC to your home TV and the whole family can enjoy your video selections.
Depending on the UMPC model you choose, it may come enabled with Bluetooth technology. This way, you can access the internet simply by placing a Bluetooth enabled device next to your UMPC. If you already own a Bluetooth enabled wireless phone or other Bluetooth enabled device, you’ll want to make sure to choose a UMPC with this capability.
In the same way, if you own a Bluetooth enabled digital camera, you’ll be able to download photos to your UMPC without having to hook up any cables. There is no software to install as the Bluetooth technology will recognize the Bluetooth enabled device.

The Samsung Q1 UMPC brings together several different applications all in one convenient portable interface that will go anywhere you go. Although loaded with Windows XP, you’ll be able to access movies, music and photos without even starting Windows. The Q1 UMPC comes enabled with either the Celeron M or Pentium M Processor that displays all of your applications on a spectacular 7” screen.
Wireless and Bluetooth enabled, the Q1, which weighs just 1.7 pounds allows you to make calls over the internet using VOIP technology. Whether standing or sitting, the Q1 is convenient to take on the go. It has a standard 3.5 hour battery time with up to 10 hours with the power bank.
You do have the option with the Q1 to add an external keyboard, mouse and printer to use it essentially as a notebook PC if desired and you can feel safe with the security features of Windows XP Service Pack 2 with the Samsung Q1 UMPC.
Best Buy features the Samsung Q1 UMPC on their website at a price of $1099.
The Asus UMPC, weighing in at slightly over 2 pounds is also Bluetooth enabled and features a camera. It features an included stylus pen for the 7” touch panel and it also comes with an external USB foldable keyboard. The Asus UMPC has a Celeron M processor and comes loaded with Windows XP Tablet OS. It also comes with microphone and headphone ports enabling the user to make VOIP phone calls.
The Founder UMPC also has a stunning 7” screen and features an Intel Celeron M or Pentium M processor, Windows XP Home or Windows XP Tablet OS and users can choose between a 30GB and 60GB hard drive. This Ultra-Mobile PC includes a camera and instant on technology. The Founder UMPC includes Joylink and Penpower software and has the option to add a USB keyboard. It has the twin array microphone which enables VOIP phone calls to be made over the internet.
The EO UMPC by tabletkiosk comes with an $899 price tag in your choice of black or white. This UMPC features a 7” screen and comes loaded with Windows XP Tablet edition with touch pack and also features a 40G hard drive. The EO UMPC contains a directional pad and 4 function keys. It is Bluetooth enabled and also has the WiFi connectivity option and it has 2 USB ports.
The EO UMPC has the stereo microphone/headphone combo enabling it to be used to make VOIP phone calls over the internet. There are also several options with this UMPC. You may elect to purchase an external CD-RW/DVD combo drive or a USB modem. You can also purchase an optional docking cradle with additional I/O ports.
As there is not a whole lot of information available on UMPCs right now, you may have to rely on UMPC reviews in order to select the best one for you. Most of them have several features in common but some, such as the Sony Micro computer, which is not really called a UMPC, has a fingerprint security measure whereby it takes the owner’s fingerprint to open some files. It will reportedly be on sale in the United States for $1800.
Launch times for most of the UMPCs already in production seem to be anywhere from early summer to fourth quarter 2006. Dell is rumored to have a UMPC in the works but so far no information on their web site is available.
Intel, of course, is a big player in the UMPC market because the new mini PCs use the Intel Celeron processors.
The UMPC is likened to one kitchen appliance that does what previously took six separate appliances to do. It brings the internet via Bluetooth in most cases and WiFi technology, giving users the ability to simply surf the internet, conduct business via email or VOIP and even to find directions instantly when lost or when needing to locate services on the road such as service stations or restaurants.
The Ultra-Mobile PC also brings entertainment along wherever you go with capabilities from listening to music to watching movies or even specific television shows. When desired, if your UMPC has an S-video output, you can connect it to your television at home in order to share your video selections with the rest of the family.
The UMPC is designed to make your life easier and it will. It will also virtually eliminate any boredom when you find yourself having to wait in a doctor’s office or even a long line as you can comfortable use any UMPC while standing.
